The Western Wall is part of the remaining of the external wall that surrounded the first and second Temples in Jerusalem, until nearly around 2000 years ago. This location is the closes to the Holy of Holies on the Temple Mount. It is the only vestige of the ancient Temple of Herod, erected by Herod.
Being the closest to the Holy of Holies, many believers put notes with requests and prayers in the spaces between the ancient wall's stones.
